International Finals Wrap-up and Results. (District Final results below)
Well the 2009/10 quiz year is in the books. Michigan was well represented once again. Congratulations go to Evergreen who won Division 1, Micah Odish the Quote Off Champion and Ben Gerig the 1on1 Champ.
Evergreen quizzed very well in the round robin format finishing with only 1 loss in their pool which was to Ada. They then quizzed and beat Ada in the tournament to send them to the losers bracket. Ada fought their way through the losers bracket and came back to Quiz Evergreen in the finals. Evergreen had a tough quiz in the first round and lost to Ada but quizzed very strong in the 2nd quiz and got a couple of timely jumps late in the quiz to put it away and take home first place.
A number of Michigan teams did well in the round robin pools but found things a little tougher in the tournament. Overall I think our teams quizzed well and gained valuable experience for next year.
The quote off was all Michigan with Ben Gerig facing off against Micah Odish. Ben was the first to qualify for the final with some stunning jumps. He seemingly got no information from the QM yet was able to get the correct verse and quote it each time. Micah got 3 right pretty quickly but then an error slowed him a down a little. He perservered and made it to the final. The final quiz was close going back and forth but ultimately Micah prevailed.
Ben went through the 1on1 bracket undefeated and faced Elita Smith from Ada in the final. In a pre-cursor to the team finals, Elita got the best of Ben in the first quiz but Ben came back strong and won the final quiz to become the 1on1 Champ.
Casey Kennedy and Spencer French finished in the top 7 in scoring for Division II. Micah Odish, Caleb Odish, Jenifer Andrews and Ben Gerig finished in the top 14 in scoring for Division 1.
The Michigan All Star Team took the 1st place crown back this year after losing it last year. While we were not quite as dominate as 2 years ago the team was very strong. We could have easily finished 3-0 but some tough calls left us at 2-1. North Central was also 2-1 but we won the head to head tie breaker having beaten them 90-50 in our first quiz. Nate again coached brilliantly and the 'hitmen' team theme may have helped to intimidate the opponents. North Central was again very loud and boisterous but we were able to quiet them down with some good quizzing. It also helped having Jon Sherry lead the lets go Michigan cheers - Thanks Jon
The Tom Schindler MVQ award went to Rachel Breden of Mason Baptist this year. Rachel is a super quizzer and was the highest scorer at international finals. More importantly, she is a first class person who sets a very Christ like example for others. Her sister Hannah won the honor last year and there are many more Breden sisters still coming up - look out. There were many worthy candidates again this year including some from Michigan.
